This evening I recorded a video and uploaded it on Youtube, about a very serious topic - an extremely cruel and damaging practice in "The Church" or "The Local Church" or "The Lord's Recovery" - that is, quarantining.
In brief, my conclusion and experience is that NO matter how illegal or egregious a sin may be, if speaking up about it makes "The Church" or a leading one look bad, the truth is, if and when at all possible, covered up and the victim(s) and/or advocate(s) for the victim(s) are shunned, publicly shamed, ostracized, ignored, stonewalled, smeared, lied to, lied about, and/or formally ex-communicated from the church community, while being described as "quarantined."
Such treatment of members, even of former members, is a classic tactic of cults so that unfavorable facts won't spread or be believed. In my case, the facts I tried to keep hidden kept stumbling many, and would still be stumbling young ones, if I weren't speaking out. Sins should be properly dealt with to care for the church, including, if necessary, the loving act of quarantining offending ones, so that they can be shepherded to repentance and be restored. But so many have gone before me, speaking with "responsible"ones about very serious matters that violate the law and/or God's Word, and the result has been public defamation, excommunication and attempted/successful humiliation of these heralds of righteousness.
Such a practice destroys lives and families and the vital function of indispensable members of Christ's Body. Such a practice deceives and stumbles trusting sheep. Such a practice fails to protect the well-being of the lambs in God's flock. It defends those in the highest positions of leadership, and publicly labels anyone who doesn't follow suit as being poisonous, "quarantining" (excommunicating) them from their church community whom they love dearly and who are often nearly their entire support network. Onlookers (other members) are warned and stricken with the fear that this could happen to them if they ever have legitimate concerns to bring up. And perpetrators of gross sins and abuse are protected.
I already wrote some about the video in its description, but I have much more to say. Due to my need to rest, I'll just paste the video's description, and then write more another time.
Video description:
I have observed over my 45+ years in "The Lord's Recovery" the quarantining of my fellow believers. I innocently believed what I was being told - that such a practice was protecting me and others from others' contagious rebellion and other sins. Now as one speaking out, I am sure to be among those being quarantined (unless an exception is made for me because of favoritism, partiality...??)... and I know that I am neither rebellious, making/seeking divisions of Christ's Body, living in gross sins, nor heretical. I am finally speaking out about abuse in the church, by church leaders, that I could no longer bear, that caused my adult children to be traumatized and hospitalized, and that no one was able to effectively address when I tried every possible private means of seeking help.
When I mentioned to a friend, an "outsider," that I am likely being quarantined, she stated that such a word is cult-speak.
I did a little study on this practice, by reading what The Lord's Recovery has published about this practice. From reading "the ministry," I realized that any practice of quarantining is and has been completely different than what has been published in this group.
Quarantining has been practiced more as ex-communication, targeting dear believers whose good consciences cannot bear the systemic abuse and covering up of gross sins, but who are seeking that such sins be dealt with and sinning ones truly recovered through repentance, forgiveness, care and love.
I post this in truth and in love for ALL of my fellow believers, and most of all in love for the God in whom we believe.
